[ yelling ] >>> punches are thrown on the courthouse steps between family members am broiled in a controversial murder case. good evening. i'm ken wayne. >> i'm gasia mikaelian. a routine court hearing erupted into a fight between two families in san jose today. one man's family wants justice for a dead father and the other is calling for leniency for the man who shot him. >> reporter: the hearing lasted about a minute while outside was the real drama where supporters from both sides got into a fight. family and friends of 26-year- old ricardo hernandez streamed out of the santa clara county courthouse this afternoon after showing up to support the second degree murder suspect. they were taunted by the family of 36-year-old christopher soriano, the man killed december 31st in san jose in what police describe was a citizens arrest gone wrong. >> i'm a widow with five kids now. >> hey, hey! . ktvu alex savidge is there now with the latest on the woman and her fire damaged apartment. what do you know alex? >> reporter: we do know this woman was in very bad shape when firefighters pulled her out of that burning apartment. it's the second story unit here at this complex in hayward. you can see a lot of damage from the outside. this was an elderly woman who suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. after this fire started about 9:30 or so inside theout. we're right in her second and e street. crews on scene told us it was a fairly small kitchen fire to begin with. as crews made their way through the unit, they found this woman inside and she was unresponsive at the time. firefighters did say they were able to get a pulse on this woman once she was transported to the hospital. crews tell us this wasn't a large fire by any stretch that left this woman injured. >> we were able to extinguish the fire fairly quickly with an aggressive interior attack. we did find a victim within the home. they found him in the bedroom during a primary search. >> reporter: no one else aside from that
on second street was out. ktvu's alex savage is live on the scene with more on the woman's injuries and what neighbors are saying. >> reporter: good morning. she is opening the elderly woman will survive after the fire. we'll push in here on the unit on the unit that, as you can see, was badly damaged. the woman suffered burns and smoke inhalation. however, firefighters did tell us the woman had a pulse when she was transported to eaton hospital. the fire broke out at this 20- unit apartment complex. crews on scene here last night say it was a fairly small kitchen fire. at this point, it was unable to get out of her apartment. but as crews made their way through the unit, they found her unconscious and neighbors are worried about the woman but grateful the fire didn't spread. >> it didn't burn our unit. it didn't catch our unit at -- at all. >> reporter: this morning, i did put in a call to the hayward fire department. spoke to the dismatcher, we'ring a call back from the battalion chief -- expecting to get a call back from the battalion chief. we do know aside from the one woman transported

. ktvu's alex savage on the scene. >> reporter: good morning. we are learning this is a home less encampment on fire. it's near the park. if you have been out near this area, it's nearby great highway and balboa street. you can see the firefighters peg out the hot spot ins the area. there was a fair amount of trees in the area where the encampment is. as we pan to the left, about three homes were threatened. we will show you where the firefighters are putting out the fire. the fire broke out on a piece of private property and this has been a long time problem, this home less encampment. there have been apparently three fire ins the past nine months. >> there's been a problem with the home less people getting in the area. fire started this morning, went undetectived for a while until seen by the garbage company. the fire get into the juniper trees which take off easily. >> reporter: the flames looked pretty large when the fire firefighters got on the scene, but thankfully, they got it under control and they are making sure the fire is out in the area. steep terrain in the area. the
on crime. ktvu's alex savidge is live for us in oakland and tells us the vote came after hundreds of speakers and a heated debate. >> reporter: well, hundreds of people spoke out on this controversial topic. there were four hours of public comment. the final vote didn't company until the morning. the council approved a consulting contract with bill bratton, a man whose past policing policies have come under fire. that vote angered many people in the audience. many in the crowd reacted strongly as the vote came down just after 2:00 this morning. ktvu had the only camera inside council chambers at the time. police moved in for a short time to maintain order. there were roughly 275 people who spoke at this lengthy council meeting. the council approved a contract with bratton's consulting firm on a 7-1 vote. bratton will help come in and help with a crime-fighting plan. critics are concerned about an apressive stop-and-frisk pomcy that -- aggressive stop-and- frisk policy that some worry could lead to racial profiling. this woman voted against this. >> a vote against this is not about

. that shooting happened at seminary and east 17th street last night shortly before 6:30. ktvu's alex savidge has been there since 4:30 this morning tells us police have been scouring the area for any signs of the suspects. alex? >> reporter: and good morning. i did just get off the phone a short time ago with a spokeswoman for the oakland police department who confirmed to me this is still a very active manhunt in the area. as i step out of the way, you can see the street is still blocked off. we're pushing you down seminary avenue. you can see the s.w.a.t. vehicle there. a number of others remain in the area trying to -- officer s remain there. they believe they have the suspects in the perimeter. they are still actively searching. the spokesperson said they've written search warrants to go inside homes as well. this began at 6:30 last night when an undercover police officer was shot and wounded during a stakeout operation. three gunmen were seen running off. police were able to take one of those men into custody. but two others escaped. throughout the night, officers were going through here wi
